This also helps to give children an unshakeable foundation because they'll follow our example of leaning on God. If we, as imperfect individuals, simply try to let our own lives be the standard for our children to live by, then we are setting them and our own selves up for a lot of disappointment. However, if we teach them what God's Word says, and show them how to read and study it for themselves, they'll have our unmoving, unchanging God to fall back on in the times when we are not able to be there for them -- like at school when a classmate is trying to make fun of them or bully them, or God forbid, hurt them.In our home, we incorporate the Holy Bible as part of our daily reading material for our homeschool. We also use Bible stories to relay important life concepts like being kind to others, just as we'd like to be treated (The Golden Rule). Making Bible reading a normal thing in our home has been a great help for us as parents. There is no better parenting partner than God Almighty...and the Bible is definitely his instruction manual for parents.
I can definitely testify that handling my kids' emotions on a daily basis is very challenging, especially because I don't get any vacations. So, asking God for wisdom, and allowing the principles in His Word to guide me, have been a tremendous help. And, even more importantly, teaching my kids how to lean on God to help them with their emotions has been wonderful, because I can see their growth and maturity (at various stages). My oldest daughter has already started dialoguing with me about this some. It feels good to know that she gets it, on some level, at least.
Scripture References:
John 6:34-36 (King James Version)
34Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
36But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
John 7:37-39 (Amplified Bible)
37Now on the final and most important day of the Feast, Jesus stood, and He cried in a loud voice, If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink!
38He who believes in Me [who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] as the Scripture has said, From his innermost being shall flow [continuously] springs and rivers of living water.
39But He was speaking here of the Spirit, Whom those who believed (trusted, had faith) in Him were afterward to receive. For the [Holy] Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honor).
